- The Great Galaxy Grid Game ╨ Operating Instructions
-
- The Great Galaxy Grid Game provides a fun way to help students of any age
- learn about the nine planets in our solar system, plus develop their strategic
- thinking skills. As Space Kid, the student will complete exploratory missions
- to each of the nine planets. The student will encounter grids and navigate past
- hidden traps to intercept space probes. The program features four missions,
- each of which contains a variety of questions and grids that range from beginner
- difficulty to advanced difficulty. Mission 1 is a training exercise that enables
- the student to become familiar with navigating through the grids. There are
- 40 stages of play in Mission 1 (i.e., 40 grids to navigate). Mission 2 is
- the start of planetary exploration. It contains 9 stages of play for each of
- the nine planets, for a total of 81 stages of play to complete the entire mission.
- Mission 3 is intermediate difficulty in planetary exploration. Compared to
- Mission 2, the questions are more numerous and detailed, and the grids contain
- more hidden traps. There are 99 total stages of play (i.e., 11 grids for each of
- the nine planets). Mission 4 is the most advanced planetary exploration adventure.
- In this Mission, grid navigation is more challenging than in the other Missions,
- as there are more hidden traps. Mission 4 is also the longest mission, with 261
- stages of play (i.e., 29 grids for each planet). Refer to the Teacher's Manual
- on the CD for an explanation of the tracking function and for more detailed
- descriptions of each of the four Missions. To play the game, proceed as follows:
-
- 1. Start the program, and click past the opening screen.
-
- 2. To begin the game, click on one of the four red "Launch Mission" buttons
- in the lower portion of the screen to select one of the four Missions. Click on
- the light blue question mark in the upper right corner of the screen to hear an explanation of the goals and object of the game.
-
- 3. In the first portion of the game, the Galaxy Grid, the user must navigate
- around hidden traps in order to retrieve space probes and bring them to the
- Space Station or destination planet in the upper right corner of the grid.
- In order to complete a grid successfully, the user must retrieve the space probe,
- if there is one present. The probe, a silver six-sided figure, can be retrieved
- by entering the grid square it occupies.
-
- 4. Use your Dange-O-Meter in the upper left portion of the screen to navigate
- around red holes in the grid. The Dange-O-Meter shows Space Kid surrounded by
- eight grid squares. These squares are divided into three zones: in front, behind,
- and beside. The numbers in the squares of each zone represent the number of red
- holes in that zone. If the indicators on Space Kid's left are red, there are more
- red holes to your left than there are to the right. When both indicators are red,
- there are equal numbers of red holes to either side.
-
- 5. After the probe is retrieved and the grid is successfully finished, the
- user will be transported to the Space Log screen. Here, the user will learn an
- important fact about the destination planet. These facts will eventually appear
- in the Promotion Test in the third portion of the game. To exit the Space Log,
- click the light blue "Return to Grid" button in the center of the screen.
-
- 6. While playing the Great Galaxy Grid Game, you can save the Promotion Tests
- you have completed successfully. To save your game, click on the blue "Save"
- button in the upper portion of the screen. Windows¿ users must label and save
- their games with the extension ".txt". To open your saved game, click on the blue
- "Open" button in the upper portion of the screen. Here, you may open only saved
- games; trying to open other files may result in an error message.
-
- 7. To exit the program, click on the "Exit" button. Because this is the
- Teacher's Edition, after clicking the "Exit" button, you will go to the
- "Tracking" screen, which gives you the option of saving and/or printing a record
- of the user's experience with the program.

- Troubleshooting Problems and Answers
-
- Problem: The program runs slowly on my computer.
- Answer: This occurs on some system configurations with 4 Megabytes of RAM.
- If increasing virtual memory is not effective, restarting with extensions off
- (by holding down the SHIFT key as the computer is turned on) or quitting all
- other open applications may help. You can also have a qualified technician add
- additional RAM.
- Problem: The "Repeat" button does not work; clicking on the question mark
- for a help message does not work.
- Answer: All of these messages are audio. Therefore, if you have a computer
- that does not have a sound card, when you click on these buttons, nothing will
- happen. However, you should be able to operate the software without these
- messages by consulting the "Operating Instructions" and the "Teacher's Manual",
- or simply by experimenting with the program. All of the planetary facts are
- displayed on the Space Log screen.
- Problem: The "Save" button in the "Save" dialogue box is inactive
- ("grayed out"), and I cannot save my game or tracking information.
- Answer: You might be trying to save to a CD-ROM or locked diskette. Designate
- a different location for the saved document (e.g., a folder on your hard drive).
- Problem: My Windows¿ on-screen display is distorted by bright or fluorescent
- colors.
- Answer: This may occur if your color palette is configured at 256 colors.
- To reconfigure it, go to your Control Panel window and double-click on the Display
- icon. From there, select the Settings tab. Set your color palette to a higher
- configuration than 256 colors (e.g. High Color or True Color).
- Problem: I left the Great Galaxy Grid Game running; after a time, my grid
- disappeared.
- Answer: If your screen saver is activated while the Great Galaxy Grid Game is
- running, a portion of your grid may disappear. If your screen saver interferes
- with regular game play, try disengaging the screen saver program.
- Problem: When the game started, I clicked on the blue "Open" button and
- ran into problems.
- Answer: Do not use the "Open" button unless you wish to retrieve a game
- you have saved previously. If you have a Windows¿ machine, make sure the file
- you attempt to open has a file name that ends in ".txt".
